Bored blue eyes flicked upward to meet freckles before his hand lowered and slid his phone into his pocket. Not only did the reception totally suck in this town, but now he had to deal with human interaction. What a day. At second observation, he didn’t mind too badly — she was a lot better than the odd old man who screeched at him earlier about corn holders.
“Yo, somethin’ close to that,” a pretentious hair flip, “I ain’t here fo’ sightseein’, that’s fo’ sure.” That came out wrong, but apologizing would be awkward. As a teen, he feared awkward. “——All I’ve seen so far have been trees n’ hicks.”
A frown weighed down the corners of her mouth—of course the kid would have an attitude. She should have been expecting this, but she hadn’t been hanging out with many teenagers lately. Suddenly aware of how old she felt, her friendly smile felt unexpectedly forced. Wendy nearly opened her mouth to correct his poor grammar, but thought better of it. She wasn't that old, not yet.
Trees and hicks. She couldn’t argue with that observation. “Well, you’re not wrong. Have you been in the forest yet?” It sounded lame to ask, but she was going somewhere cool with this. Maybe she could show him some cool supernatural junk. She’d been meaning to go into the forest for exploring anyway, and it’d be nice to have company, even if it was a bratty teenager.
